Youth Football Clinic Creates Special Day of Character Building for Newark Youth

Timex Performance Center – April 13, 2010 -- Athletes in Action, a leader in sports ministry, conducted its annual youth football clinic in the New York Giants Timex Performance Center Field House. More than 40 7th and 8th grade boys from the Link Community School in Newark, New Jersey, participated and sharpened their football and life skills during the free afternoon program.

Special guests included several members of the NY Giants football team who taught the boys not only football drills but spoke about the importance of developing character traits (perseverance, honesty, goal-setting, choosing friends/handling peer pressure) that will help them succeed in the game of life.

“This annual football clinic is the highlight of the year for many of the boys attending and for the Giants who volunteer their time to help make a difference in a young person’s life,” said George McGovern, director, Athletes in Action, and chapel leader for the Giants and New York Yankees. “The game of football is all about building character and each Giant player involved shared a ‘chalk talk’ about a character trait meaningful to him and imparted it to the boys.”

The New York Giant players who participated in the clinic were:

  • Ramses Barden
  • Dereck Hagan
  • William Beatty
  • Sha'reff Rashad
  • Vince Anderson
  • Jacob Bender
  • Bryan Kehl
  • Terrell Thomas
